You are quite right, it is clearly marked. I didn't pay enough attention to that photo. Confirms what I thought.

The barrels were appearantly heavily modified after 1947 so it's hard to be sure what the original caliber of the lower barrel was - but I'm quite certain it was not .577 BPE. I would contact the factory with the serial number; I did so about my 1951 Merkel and they sent me the info from their records.

Jani, agree, it's "folks art" after 1947. Also, there is some descriptions over there about bottle neck case (from 24G to 28G)and .577BPE (?) I very doubt it was 577BPE.
Seems under barrel been replaced for something unusual.

Thanks, everybody. The under barrel seems an example of what strict firearm laws do to people. They'd rather spoil a gun then part with it. Yet, I can't help admiring the unknown person that managed to bore out a 28 ga paradox inside a rifle barrel, possibly in absense of a properly tooled gun shop, and under threat of spending a few years in a labor camp.
