I purchased a 12 ga 1894, Grade BE, at an antique show this weekend. Under the foreend and on the part of the bottom rib are the remains of what looks like black paint, over the damascus barrels. It does not appear to be bluing.
Today I found the following gun on gunbroker, that has the same black paint on the barrels.

I have never seen this before. Was this a common practice to cover up the damascus pattern? It looks like it was done a long time ago on both guns.
thanks,
Gordon

There have been charlatans at every time and age. Even though life is short, we all live long enough to see the evidence of one man's trying to fool another man for added profit.
Rest assured. Your Damascus Remington is a winner. Discount the paint and clean it off. Unless you wish to have some evidence of man's foolishness to share with your buddies.
Best,
John

Thanks John. I plan on removing the paint after taking some pictures to share with my buddies. I have seen damascus barrels that had been blued to hide the pattern, but not ones that had been painted black.

gordon g,

It may well have been to hide the damascus. I picked up a very early Fox that had Krupp steel barrels painted over. Some one suggested it may have been done by a duck hunter in an attempt to "hide the glare". But who knows..

Just a question, as I have no personal knowledge of this, but might the paint have been an attempt by a "Coastal" waterfowler to give the bbls more protection from the salty atmosphere?

I have seen several guns which had been painted to protect them from salt marsh use. Once saw a Model 12 that that had been chrome plated by the owner so he did not have to clean it and could start happy hour that much sooner. He did own a liquor distributorship so to him drinking was a important part of shooting. He also had one of the best cane gun collection on Earth and a trip to his basement was worth a lifetime of one of a kind guns that he had collected. Had a bullet form the rifle that was shot out of a (the) book depository.

Interesting comment KY.....a bit morbid for me though.

No harm intended,
