Here's what has worked great for me. Go to the office supply store (Office Depot, Staples) and buy an easle pad that has the 1 inch squares printed on the sheets - kind of like large engineering paper. 50 sheets for $12.00. The pads are about 30 inches x 36 inches. You can easily determine how many inches your pattern is off by counting the squares.
