I purchased a 12 ga 1894, Grade BE, at an antique show this weekend. Under the foreend and on the part of the bottom rib are the remains of what looks like black paint, over the damascus barrels. It does not appear to be bluing.
Today I found the following gun on gunbroker, that has the same black paint on the barrels.
http://gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.asp?Item=83690744 I have never seen this before. Was this a common practice to cover up the damascus pattern? It looks like it was done a long time ago on both guns.
thanks,
Gordon
