Swamped means sunken, that explains it accurately. The rib is sunken between the two barrels.
Concave refers to the nature of the rib surface. A concave rib can ride pretty high and be concave but not swamped.
The Fench Ideal has an "I" section rib, which incorporates top and bottom rib, connecting via the vertical part of the "I". It is by definition swamped. Perfect explanation.

GB, what are you trying to ascertain regarding MF Ideals. What the swamped ribs look like or what MF called them? i was simply trying to point out the difference between a "traditional" two piece rib, common to most english/continental/american doubles, and the one piece central I-beam as frequently used by french makers. it seems to me to be a useful distinction for the purpose of this thread. the post by shotgunlover makes the same observation. i own three mf guns; a late robust, and two ideals, a late 1930's 16 and the 1928 12 that was in the morphy auction earlier this year. which reminds me - i should post a pm to you. best regards, tom

All the guns Ive seen with swamped ribs basically had a bottom rib soldered in as a top rib, except at the back, for frame-to-rib transition purposes, and at the muzzles in order to keep the bead placed for proper sighting. The Darne catalog pictures demonstrate this well.

It isnt that simple.
The rib on the bottom is usually flat, parallel, and consistent along its entire length. Almost every swamped rib Ive ever seen curves down and then back up as it approaches the muzzle. They usually end in a ramp with a short flat section that mounts the bead. There is usually no bottom rib on a gun with a swamped rib, and, peculiar to Darne guns, seldom a bottom rib on a gun with a game rib, either.

Ted, thats what I was trying to describe. More or less standard height at the back and front, but dips down for all but the first and last couple inches. In between looks a lot like a bottom rib.

I took a look at the MF Ideal 1910 manuals posted above, thinking about translating them. Locked-down...I prefer a gin-martini.

seems like the difference between a swamped rib and a sunken rib, could be the degree of rib slope at the breech end of the barrels...
amazing that it took us five pages to git here...
