I started AyA #2 on the slackum regimen last week in Sept. My version is a bit heavy on the beeswax and Venice turps and a bit light on the BL cf. to the Hadoke recipe but it did set quickly usually in about six hours. Some days I tried to do two applications. The build was amazingly fast and the grain starting to fill and flat out in raking light but I have found in subsequent weeks that one application per week gives the preceding coat a bit of time to cure hard. I may soon go to once a month. Also doing Flues 4E, Brum boxlock, Ruger Vaquero grips, and stripped and tung oil "finish" finished Browning Lightning Trap. About as close to no-mess painless gunstock refurb and maintenance as I think I'll ever come. I just do it every nite right before going to bed. My wife won't let up on me about "polishing my butt".

Jack, where did you get your Venice Turps from? I might have a chance to get my
Better Half to bring me some, but I would need to have it delivered to Orlando
(of all places) before Halloween. Thanks in advance for your directions.

Jack, if you are seeing the slackum oil getting slow to fully dry and cure, try setting/hanging the oiled stock out in the direct sunlight for a few hours. A bit of ultraviolet light will assist in hardening the finish.

I was finishing a rather pourous stock with the Warthog kit and I was having trouble with the finish being "tacky" for extended periods. A local writer, photographer, and gunmaker suggested wiping down the tacky finish with a fine coat of Japan Dryer. This produced almost instant good results and also left the finish looking better than before the application. I would assume it would work on most slacum recipies, too.

Um-um, NOTHING I do is tacky!! Ok, most of it. I have had no curing problems. However, overcoating too frequently probably doesn't give a solid cure underneath.

JayCee, I got mine from Hawthorne Products, 16828 N. State Rd. 167 N., Dunkirk Indiana 47336. Ph: 1-800-548-5658 Email: http://www.hawthorne-products.com. It is the horse cuticle variety in a pint can with brush applicator lid. I know you have the carnauba. If it doesn't work out on the handcarry by Halloween, I'll sent you some. Or I could order it and have it shipped to Orlando address but the time window probably is a bit narrow at one week. Local horse owner, vet or shoer might be good lead on sources your location.
