Possibly for a presentation rifle that ended up not happening? More likely it got sent to the engraver by mistake.

Somewhere in the past I recall seeing a G&H(?) sporterized Garand. Possibly seperated at some point? If I find the photo I will post.

Can this mount be installed on my presentation M1 without drilling?

The Garand M1C mount does require the drilling 5 holes to attach the mounting plate... here's a pic ![[Linked Image from i.imgur.com]](https://i.imgur.com/8SXEvAE.jpg)

Here are my thoughts, after the war, these were surplussed, maybe someone bought this as surplus and had it engraved and placed on something like a highly engraved Remington Model 8 or 81.

The engraving is quality. I've imagined it to be a Joseph Fugger practice piece... but no signature, so wishful thinking. The market for a numbered M1C mount is around $2200-$2400... hard to grasp that the engraving actually will devalue the piece by 40-50%... such is life.

The engraving is of lower quality. Coarse and very quickly cut. Not in the Fugger style or his skill range. The overall look of it (pattern, style & cutting) I'd say it's a good bet it was done in Japan, Philippines, etc. But there certainly are engravers in the US that are capable of such work.
