Tim,
There are many Ames companies, one being the department stores in CT, there is an Ames winery in CA and even a town called Ames.
The Ames mentioned by Buzzbee above is one of America's oldest continuing manufacturers, now known as Ames True Temper. President Lincoln called on the company personally (in 1861) during the Civil War to ask them to supply shovels to the Union cause. Lincoln spoke directly with Oliver Ames, then the principal of Ames Co. At the time of Lincoln's request, Ames Co. was already celebrating its 85th birthday. Although the year is uncertain, it is believed that Ames Co. was founded in 1774.
They took over/merged with True Temper and are owned ultimately 87% by Chatt Holding, a private equity investment vehicle.
At a bet, I would say that the O. Ames on your case ( a rather patrician one!) is related to the co. above, as forenames remain in families and follow certain patterns.
Good luck with the repair
K.
