I have an opportunity to purchase a Remington 1894 in 10 gauge with mint bores and a fair amount of case coloring on the action. The price is $299, the bad news is the stock is cracked and pinned at the wrist and some moron electro etched their social security number on the bottom of the action. It would definitely be a project gun, but is it worth the $299 in its present state?

Remington Hammerless Doubles in 10-gauge seem to be rather scarce, so I gotta believe that what you describe is certainly worth the price of a Wally Mart Remington 870!

I would buy this thing and add plate on each side of grip like those found on some old English big-bore double rifles.

Just as parts it would fetch say $200. And with mirror bores(Damascus I would assume) in 10 bore, I would say it is a value for project gun or a parts gun for another Remington 10 bore. It depends on how much you want to invest for a stock repair or new stock. I would assume that there weren't many stolen ids during the era it was etched.

Well, I know it is more money, but I would think the stock could be fixed. I had Bob Fulton, do a couple of stock repairs for me, and it is a very nice job.

If you have deep pockets take a peak at that 10br A grade @ Griffin & Howe site. This $299 one could come in handy if parts are interchangeable.

Yes !!! If the stock is now solid and sound, grin as you shoot this classic. If not solid and sound, it is an easy fix with a cookie, staple and a little plug. A tad of faux work and it is good to go.
This is not a museum piece but one of the finest American SxS available. That price is a steal.

Yes, I have recently found out that Remington Arms made some gems! In fact, some are second to none.
