I've really kinda passed on doves this year, squirrel hunted instead and will deer hunt again. Re-started my hunting with deer, they're close at hand and enough to go around. Then it'll be ducks, with a few crows thrown in the pot - maybe a fat Christmas Goose too!

Sounds like a lot of excuses to me: too many ATV's, road hunters, ambushers, etc. You can say the same thing about seeing all the Viagra, feminine products and overactive bladder commercials on TV, drive by shootings, drugs on every street corner, etc. There's still plenty of territory where you can get out with that old sporterized Jap rifle or with your dad's Remington 14, IF YOU WANT TO. Put on an old Woolrich deer hunting outfit, and step back 50 years while you wile away the day watching a nice crossing, or doing some still hunting. So what if you come across a guy in the latest fad tree stand complete with satellite TV feed? You're doing what you want to do. So many excuses, so little time left.....

IMHO, bushwhacking Bambi is just one step up from shooting critters over bait. And too many once-a-year slob hunters are doing it these days. In Minnesota, rifle deer season spoils two weeks of sutumn when a man can't spend his days in the woods walking, working a dog and wingshooting.

I'm no dyed-in-the-wool deer hunter Jack, but would rather take advantage of all the seasons - not just one(your not a fan of ducks either I know). All these distasteful hunting seasons, like deer and turkey, pay for your walks in the woods. Deer rifles keep the wheels of our sport on rolling - not old double guns. 450,000 will buy deer tags in Missouri, bet the local rural VFW hall could hold all the uplanders with room to spare.

If it's ethical, fair chase, and within the law I'm for any hunting season, even if I don't partake. A slob hunter can make any pursuit look bad fur or feather. I hear too many "hunters against hunters" comments these days.

I do like my bird hunting but there's no comparison matching wits against a cagy old buck, compared with a bird with an acorn sized brain. Especially if you use dogs to help get the birds, not much of a mental challenge there. Sure you can hunt deer with all kinds of modern gadgets, baited stands, trailcams, walkietalkies. But you can do it the traditional way too. Don't compare traditional hunting with the bs stuff you see on the TV sports shows.

...your not a fan of ducks either I know... As you have proven time and again, Lowell, you know a lot less than you claim. I've had duck hunting articles published in Shooting Sportsman, Gun Dog and Wildfowl magazines.

Last I read from you, you've sold your alum. duck boat and had other complaints about the sport and the weather of it's season. Keep up-to-date ol'bean!

Sorry to you guys who don't enjoy it, but I've shot the majority of my deer with double shotguns, close up. Bird hunting is fun, but deer hunting is life. And I don't mean sitting in a tree all day. I mean sneaking around the woods HUNTING. Standing still in BLAZE ORANGE and watching the idiot flatlanders walk up within 20 yards without seeing you. AND of course, sneaking up on that deer in it's bed. And where I come from, no guarantees of anything even if you are a great hunter, unlike the magazines. Here, you used to be a hero just to get one, lucky or not. Real hunting. Besides guns, deer hunting is just about the only thing worth all the trouble to me (excluding family of course, and the lucky moose tag I pulled this year!) Just my take on things. My passions. Deer hunt or not, isn't the fall fun? From playing in the woods , to going into the college boy rut in the fall, it's what life is all about. Enjoy! Rick
