Does anyone know of a site or thread that explains how to antique a gun? It seems like I saw something on this a year or two back for a revolver and would like to do this to the receiver of a SxS shotgun. If I remember right, you hot blue the metal and then use a browning agent to "antique" the metal.

Does anyone have any idea what I am talking about here?

Why wouldn't you just use Laurel Mountain browning solution?

I am really looking for a step-by-step explanation of what to do with pictures.

Any ideas where I can find this?

Brownells.com and type in Laurel Mountain and you'll see the browning solution. Call the tech line there and speak with someone or ask the sales person for tech literature on browning steels.

It's a revelation! Laurel Mountain Forge browning liquid No degreasing! I have a Damasscus 12 bore hammer gun a friend browned, turned out very well. I bought a bottle of the browning solution and am practising on a 22 rifle barrel and it's coming along very well, I'll try a damascus sxs barrel I had to sand down after dent removal, so I lost the damascus pattern where I sanded, I plan on using a weak soulution of muriatic acid to etch the pattern then brown it with the Laurel Forge solution. Just imagine, no degreasing, no fingerprints, just what we need, we basement smiths. It does not even stink the house out, although I think the muriatic acid application will do that, so out to the picnic table on the lawn.

I purchased a AH Fox that someone had removed the old stock without pulling the sears. To do that they used a hammer on the balls of the action. To "restore" it I filed the dents out, buffed the area, recut the single line of engraving and then used touch up blue and brown to age it. AH, the beauty of well aged patina.

The receivers of most SxS shotguns were color hardened. With age & use the colors mostly wore off leaving a somewhat shiny appearance. Only in the case of extreme neglect did rust take over, thus most "Antiquing" methods are not really appropriate for a SxS receiver. For bbls I once did a set using Laurel forge brownimg solution. I applied several coats & carded them without boiling as for a brown finish. Rust adhered very tightly & was difficult to do a good carding job so finish was a little "Fuzzy". After a good build-up was obtained I threw the last rusting in the tank for a boiling water treatment. Result was a sort of muddy blue which looked about like a 75-100 yr old set of blued bbls, turned brown. Most likely this would give similar results on a receiver if that is the type of finish you are seeking.
