Very nice pup James. Many memories will be in the making. But, would sure be nice to know what the older dog's thoughts are, lol!

CB, do you work your setters of Ruffed Grouse? I have worked them on all the upland game I hunt. That includes ruffed grouse, spruce grouse, woodcock, pheasant, Hungarian partridge and sharp tails. I’m hoping to add territory that includes quail and chukar in the next season. Was scouting the area in November and it looked promising. The only type I now don’t is later season sharptail, if I’m specifically hunting those, say for example in the Nebraska Sandhills. Those birds won’t hold for anything. And the advice not to use dogs came from a life long Nebraska Sandhills hunter. IMHO it was good advice. How do Ruffed Grouse hold for your setters? In the past when hunting, before I finally settled on a dog, the older friends I hunted with that had pointers lamented how much grouse run instead of holding. Eastern Coyote ruined it for them was the consensus. Just wondering. BTY, great looking pup. I'm happy for you.

Well bred, well trained, experienced, ruffed grouse dogs, seek, point, and in some cases, pressure the bird just enough to “set” it.
I’ve shot over dogs that have pointed 1000’s of ruffed grouse over their career.
It takes lots of time in the forest.
The best grouse dogs are specialists, as their deft hand, and long nose, makes them unsuitable for some species.
They are almost always very smart dogs.
Out there doing it best I can.

Thought I would hijack further and share a photo of my new pup, Oscar, my second WPG. ![[Linked Image from jpgbox.com]](https://www.jpgbox.com/jpg/63099_1024x473.jpg)

Charles D. looks great, James. Happy for you. And let the hijack continue: Dagmar (pudelpointer) is now 2. Hard to believe it. ![[Linked Image from i.imgur.com]](https://i.imgur.com/axuOWQG.jpg) ![[Linked Image from i.imgur.com]](https://i.imgur.com/4aaop7C.jpg) The grouse at our place flush wild 50 yards away. Oscar is 8 months old and in the process of being “started” by someone more seasoned and qualified than yours truly. He is a cousin of my current dog, Lucy, who has been a fantastic grouse dog and an above average pheasant dog over her 11 years.
