My new pup, a Llewellin named Charles Daly (Daly) came home on Sunday age 14 weeks. I think the fact she's called Charles Daly makes her a suitable subject for discussion here. She is now my fifth Llewellin and with each new one it gets harder and harder to imagine getting another breed. Here's some pics. With my son: ![[Linked Image from photos.smugmug.com]](https://photos.smugmug.com/Dogs/i-KCW6RLx/0/9e3926b5/XL/IMG_0977-XL.jpg) On her own: ![[Linked Image from photos.smugmug.com]](https://photos.smugmug.com/Dogs/i-8rFqWrp/0/89ac069d/XL/IMG_0982-XL.jpg) Relaxing with Scout: ![[Linked Image from photos.smugmug.com]](https://photos.smugmug.com/Dogs/i-jpvvBDJ/0/6c43b621/XL/IMG_0984-XL.jpg) ![[Linked Image from photos.smugmug.com]](https://photos.smugmug.com/Dogs/i-j3VXHkf/0/0ebe3bc2/XL/IMG_0985-XL.jpg)

Glad to see the pup and older dog are at least peaceful at times. Nice looking Llewelyn. Is it going to stay mostly white or will it "tick" out as it gets older?

Congrats, James. I know you have had this on your mind for some time. Good looking pup, the correct breed, of course, and I expected nothing less from you. May you enjoy many happy seasons together with Daly.
Best, Ted

CB, do you work your setters of Ruffed Grouse? I have worked them on all the upland game I hunt. That includes ruffed grouse, spruce grouse, woodcock, pheasant, Hungarian partridge and sharp tails. I’m hoping to add territory that includes quail and chukar in the next season. Was scouting the area in November and it looked promising. The only type I now don’t is later season sharptail, if I’m specifically hunting those, say for example in the Nebraska Sandhills. Those birds won’t hold for anything. And the advice not to use dogs came from a life long Nebraska Sandhills hunter. IMHO it was good advice.

Congrats on the new pup James! My Toller pup is 6 months old, his dad is finally starting to accept him. Somewhat LOL. My first bird dog was a Ryman and awhile back tried going back to an ES and went with a rescue Lew. But didn't work out for me. You know what works for you and I am sure that things will work out great, and good name :-)

In the past when hunting, before I finally settled on a dog, the older friends I hunted with that had pointers lamented how much grouse run instead of holding. Eastern Coyote ruined it for them was the consensus. Just wondering. BTY, great looking pup. I'm happy for you.

Well bred, well trained, experienced, ruffed grouse dogs, seek, point, and in some cases, pressure the bird just enough to “set” it.
I’ve shot over dogs that have pointed 1000’s of ruffed grouse over their career.
It takes lots of time in the forest.
The best grouse dogs are specialists, as their deft hand, and long nose, makes them unsuitable for some species.
They are almost always very smart dogs.
Out there doing it best I can.

Charles D. looks great, James. Happy for you. And let the hijack continue: Dagmar (pudelpointer) is now 2. Hard to believe it. ![[Linked Image from i.imgur.com]](https://i.imgur.com/axuOWQG.jpg) ![[Linked Image from i.imgur.com]](https://i.imgur.com/4aaop7C.jpg) The grouse at our place flush wild 50 yards away. Oscar is 8 months old and in the process of being “started” by someone more seasoned and qualified than yours truly. He is a cousin of my current dog, Lucy, who has been a fantastic grouse dog and an above average pheasant dog over her 11 years.

As long as we are hijacking I will continue as well, although Nova Scotia flushers for me James you met Nova a few years ago, he has been the best upland Toller I have owned to date. Been around the breed ~30 years now and have been hooked on them since. ![[Linked Image from live.staticflickr.com]](https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/50530343537_fc37650223_b.jpg) His son Jack who is now 6 months old. ![[Linked Image from live.staticflickr.com]](https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/50552949577_a074dc3842_b.jpg) Named him Jack in honor of my FIL who passed away 10 years ago and introduced me to the breed. He was the NSDTR (USA) Rescue Coordinator for Region 1 when it extended from Maine down to Virginia. Pretty sure Jack is going to be every bit as good or better than his dad. Either way looks like a bunch of us are in for a great time this fall! First year hunting for a dog to me is more about getting the dog excited and having fun. But I do demand discipline from the dog at all times.

Great to see the new sporting dog pups. I lost my GWP Willie Christmas before last, and my wife's Cavalier Spaniel last Summer. We settled on an American Cocker for our second dog. My yellow Lab, Stella seems to be able to take care of my bird finding and retrieving needs, but maybe the Cocker pup "Jake" will make a flusher/retriever. We'll see...Geo
