If it were a four digit gun, it couldn't be a PH. In fact it couldn't be a hammerless gun. Your dialog was confusing because we assumed you were going to say "and the extractor clicked like it was ejecting a shell", but you somehow didn't complete the thought. It is also no mystery that a four digit gun would not have a "wear plate" since the gun was obviously made decades before such a thing was included in Parker design. I'm not sure you were actually looking at a Parker Brothers gun since you didn't describe any of the markings on the gun except a lone "P". You could have thrown him a curve and asked him whether he would take $3400 cash for the gun.
