Reading some older, much older posts about Pieper I find a mix of opinions, who woulda thunk? I saw prices thrown out of a few hundred dollars to long commentaries on how exquisite Pieper's work was.

I am looking at the gun below and the seller is asking way more than a few hundred dollars for this. Any thoughts on the rough value? I shoot everything I buy.

Last time I saw a Pieper sidelock of that era and engraving style it was a 12 ga and sold at auction for around $1800. I think it was Rock Island and it was about 10 years ago. I think this one is a little nicer and of course it’s a 16. But at the same time I’d say prices for those mid quality vintage SxS are off from where they were 10 years ago.

In 2020 I noted that a coupled similar modells but with much less adornment were appraised around $900.

Interesting >>Bayard Steel<< stamp.

Beautiful gun. I'd guess (and it's just a guess) that the pricing ought to equivalent to some of the lesser known, but still quality, Spanish makers. A 16 gauge SLE by one of them seems to be selling in the $3,000-4,500 range, depending on the level of finish and the era in which it was produced.

I don't think it to be a bona fide side lock, but some variant. But I need to dig a bit.

Seems like PeteM may have had the same or similar?

Just as a sidenote, Henri Pieper had other hybrids like this horseless carriage from 1905:

https://patents.google.com/patent/US937859

U.S. of A. Patent Nr. 937859

Rainey, Henri died around 1898.....how could he have a patent from 1905?

Pretty sure that was the auction I was thinking of. I'm guessing the high end of the estimated range stuck in my head. Still, not bad after a dozen years....lol

In a 1893 patent the 2nd Henri (?) was called Henri Jr.

IIRC Nicholas was the second son; Maybe Henri Jr. was the first-born.

Both Henris listed in the 1891 Catalogue officiel général; préliminaires, Section Belge, Sections spéciales:

Pieper, Henri, arms manufacturer, in Liège,

Pieper, Henri, son, Managing Director of the International Electricity Company, in Liège.

According to https://www.automag.be/Histoire-de-l-usine-Pieper-Imperia Henri Sr. and his son founded the latter firm together in 1889.

I think it's a fine looking gun. I guess the question is how much would you pay for it? I will say the asking price is just south of $2k
