The aspen leaves are turning to gold, the woods are opening up, the mornings are crisp and the sun's rays are aslant the logging roads. Every year at this time, part of my ritual gearing up for the grouse season is a re-reading of William Harnden Foster's classic 'New England Grouse Shooting.'

If you haven't read it - or re-read it lately - you're in for a treat!

I just re-read it last night. Great Book.
In fact, I have a little 16 gauge, 0 frame, Parker hammer gun, to do my grouse shooting with, just like his. :-)

Evening ritual of late has been: Rub off last coat of finish from stock project, apply next coat. Go upstairs wash up and read a chapter of Spiller...season starts tomorrow AM. Feels like Christmas eve today.

Wish that nice autumn weather would make it's way down here. Still in the 80's (weather, not music).

Kind regards,

Best part of Foster's book is his artwork, the ink drawings or etchings. It is, indeed, a fine book.
NY season opens Monday. There seem to be birds in my area. Looking forward to a new season. I will head out to MI next week with some friends on this board, our first trip in your direction for grouse. Hope the weather is a little cooler than it is here.
Wish you well for good season. Best, Will

Dave, I have the same circa 1889, mint with handloaded brass, but on grouse use more-open 20ga SKB o/u and L.C. Smith field. The Parker is literally "alive" and the Elsie most elegant field, in my opinion, but I shoot best with the 26-inch o/u---on everything.

We are fortunate out here on the Great Plains. I just got back to the ranch from my 2nd Prairie Grouse hunt. I hunted the Nebraska National Forest, packing a DS16 Lefever. Everything was perfect, cool weather, lots of birds, no hunters, dog worked well......... Envy you eastern grouse hunters tho. Yes it is a great book.

Will, I just watched the weather, and the temps for the first week in Oct. are supposed to be in the 80's. Might be a little cooler in the U.P. What area are you planning on hunting?

Tried to get New England Grouse Shooting from the Library, bu tno luck. I have been succesful at the Library in getting original editions of Burton Spiller's Grouse Feathers, More Grouse Feathers, Drummer in the Woods and others. I read those again late this summer.

Back for a couple of days from grouse hunting in Michigan. Birds are up, but it was still quite green. More so than usual for this time of year. The woodcock seem to be bouncing back and that was nice to see.

Best of luck to those of you have Oct 1st openers.
