Friday, I took shipment of a Ugartachea 28 ga I am very happy with it although I prefer ejectors. I had borrowed the gun a few years ago for the Southern SXS. I shot lousy with it. I had one of the vendors measure the choke, he told me it was full and extremely full.
I got a very good deal on the gun because I got it from a friend who could not shoot it well but mainly he just wanted me to have the gun. I had planned to open the chokes and lengthen the stock to 15.5" with a recoil pad.
The first thing did was shoot a round of skeet. I shot a 24 missing the high 5 target(a easy floater). I missed because I was trying to be perfect because of the full choke, a mistake I sometimes make when shooting field guns at skeet.
I had a fellow skeet shooter measure the choke and it showed 9 in the right barrel and 22 in the left, probably a tight IC and light full. I have decided not to open the choke as I hunt more Blue quail than anything. Having said that I can see it mutilating some planted pheasant.
I am still considering the pad although lenghening the stock will essentially lower it by 3/32". It is curently about 14.75". The two guns that I have had made have 16" stocks(I got that measurement from Chris Batha) and fit me well. It will also free me from worrying about the checkered butt and reduce the recoil that I feel in my cheek although as a quail gun it will not be shot hundreds of rounds a day.
I realize that many will respond that lenghtening the stock will not reduce recoil. First I must state without reservation that you are wrong. ALthough I have never really felt any recoil on my shoulder I do feel it in my cheek. I am also mentally bothered by it because of a problem in my left eye. I have had too many concusions in my life. I am not a giant but in some ways evolution might have passed me by(or maybe and ancestor drank too much at her cage cleaning job at the zoo!) as I slightly resemble an orangutang although not as strong I am considered by my new wife to be more slightly more attractive although less attractive according to my former wife.
I will probably try a slip on if I can find one. I know I have one in my garage somewhere.
I welcome your opinions but I am mainly writing this to brag about my new gun(my first 28 ga SXS) and occupy myself while I make sure that my new Drahthaar puppy, Casey, does not redecorate the rug.
Hey it is the last day of dove season maybe I will go!
