I stopped in yesterday at the Mesa, AZ shop to get a gift certificate for someone and naturally toured the fine gun room. Only thing that caught my eye was a "German Guild Gun" with price of $19,995.99. It had a split forend, finish pretty much gone so I wanted to see why they were so enthusiastic about the price. While the barrels were Krupp, all the proofs were Belgium. The box lock did have maybe a little better than normal engraving coverage but certainly not significantly more. What are they thinking pricing guns this way. Think I will take a couple of my German guns over there and offer them for 50% of that price. Then I can buy a Diamond Regent grade Linder Daly with the proceeds for about $15,000.

Jerry: Drive West to Cabellas in Glendale if you want to see some real eyepopping prices IMO. I've been in there twice and wasn't even tempted due to the outrageous pricing. BTW: Even if BPS has the decimal point shifted one place to the right by mistake that gun would still be overpriced from your description. Jim

That's a ridiculous number. A mistake probably made by a guy that can price a tricked out AR or Remmy 700 to the dime.

I have given up on Bass Pro shops totally. Just yesterday I called our local store in St. Charles Missouri. I was inquring about some shotgun shells they had for sale. I was put on hold for around 10 minutes with the guys back at the gun counter. One of them picked up and told me that they didn't have time for my phone call and to try another day. I then asked to be connected to the store manager as I thought this was ignorant. After waiting another 15 minutes with no one picking up, I hung up. I will go into that store one more time, and that is to speak to the manager in person and explain to him why they have lost my business for good. For a store to treat a customer like that is not accetable to me. I will go down the road a few more miles and give my business to Cabela's. Horrible customer service at the St. Charles Bass Pro shop if you ask me, and any of my friends and family. Not sure what is going on there, but they do not have their act together on helping out their customers. Long waits, not enough employees to answer questions, yesterdays situation was the last straw for me.

A JABC for $20K! The tide has turned at last. I knew those London guns were a fad. Pete

Bass Pro is the home of the $3,00.00 Nitro Special. Thats right a restocked, badly done job by the way, chambers reamed to 3", highly polished metal receiver with just enough barrel finish to see what use to be 80% finish.
At first I thought they were just mistaken in the price but now I see a uniform ten fold over price policy. Hard to find real gun experts and even the best $7.00 - 8.00 help can only do so much.

My opinion is that BassPro and Cabela's do not try to rip people off, but just have some moderately competent people that make mistakes. Sometimes, a lot of big mistakes.
When they underprice a gun, we seldom complain, and buy it on the spot. I have done so a few times, and didn't feel obligated to tell them of their error.
I've been told they both target about a 35% profit on used guns, but I've seen a few cases where I know what they paid for the gun, and the markup was closer to 100%.
The St. Charles, Missouri has a nice Lefever, except that someone polished the receiver "bright" with a buffing wheel. The gun is priced as though it were in 90% original condition - which it is not. Maybe the pricing person doesn't know the receiver should be case colored.
Remember that we also see some ridiculous prices on gunbroker, auctionarms, etc...
Buyers need to be careful in both these chain stores (and everywhere else) when buyng used guns.

What are they buying these guns for? Has anyone ever sold them a gun? How did they feel about the price they got?

Cabela's in St.Louis is a supermarket, with a supermarket atmosphere. The gunroom had all the warmth and charm of a dentist office. I'll never go back!

Cabelas, Gander Mountain ( we have a new one here in College Station) , Bass Pro. Their pricing is based on ignorance, and I believe, a willingness to err on the high side, a lot.
Several years ago, I went to Bass Pro in Katy and they had something I was interested in. I dont remember - it was a 4th tier excellent condition Jones underlever. The maker escapes me. But the price tag was $8900 . When I saw it, I sort of choked, and suggested that the decimal point was misplaced. I was straightened out immediately, informed that this was a classic, they dont make them like this any more, "its a DOUBLE BARREL", finest English workmanship, etc. Didn't I know anything?
I admitted I might not.
They may still have the gun, for all I know. I never went back.
