I know that cannot be determined in a pic but every double I've ever seen that had such a gap at the breech face was. No checkering ........ odd for a gun with so much engraving. Restock? Cut barrels......... or just very short. SRH May God bless America and those who defend her.

In directories as Charles Hummel, Gunmaker in 1850, Hummel & Mauermann in 1873, and C. Hummel & Son, 1877-1897. Several half-stock plains rifles by Hummel are known. He eventually became one of the largest gun dealers in Texas. His later newspaper ads featured Colts, Winchesters, various shoguns, pistols, cutlery, ammunition, etc. at the "Sign of the Golden Winchester Carbine and Colt's Pistol". The above info derived from "The Texas Gun Trade" by Chris Hirsch. And thanks for telling us how it happened. It gave me closure of the shock of the bad news. The first thing I noticed was what looked to me was off face barrels. That with such short barrels makes the whole thing suspect. Time to move on to the next gun. So many guns, so little time!
