I dont know Charles Hammel, but the top lever and safety are near duplicates of a Charles Daly.

I'd be very careful there. That gun, by appearances, is off face. I know that cannot be determined in a pic but every double I've ever seen that had such a gap at the breech face was.

No checkering ........ odd for a gun with so much engraving. Restock?

Cut barrels......... or just very short.

>>Charles Hummel (1819-1902)
In San Antonio, Texas 1847-1902, Listed in the 1850 census as a gunsmith, age 30, from Germany with wife Caroline, age 30, from France. In directories as Charles Hummel, Gunmaker in 1850, Hummel & Mauermann in 1873, and C. Hummel & Son, 1877-1897. Several half-stock plains rifles by Hummel are known. He eventually became one of the largest gun dealers in Texas. His later newspaper ads featured Colts, Winchesters, various shoguns, pistols, cutlery, ammunition, etc. at the "Sign of the Golden Winchester Carbine and Colt's Pistol".

The above info derived from "The Texas Gun Trade" by Chris Hirsch. Chris devotes about 6 1/2 pages to Charles Hummel, including photos of guns and newspaper ads.<<

It actually looks like an A&D Body Action with those indicators along with a sideplate which extends the full length?? I would hazard a guess of late 1880s? Looks like Suhl, or @ least German engraving.

I agree with Stan and I am happy he is here now to make comment. Congrats on your recovery! And thanks for telling us how it happened. It gave me closure of the shock of the bad news.

The first thing I noticed was what looked to me was off face barrels. That with such short barrels makes the whole thing suspect. Time to move on to the next gun.

So many guns, so little time!

But the lugs are slighting recessed. It may be off face but it seems the tubeset is dropping?
