Hoping someone here can here shed some light on a potential purchase. There is a SxS for sale at my LGS that has the action described as "one of the old sought after Sauer box locks made between the wars". Serial number is 220444.

Please forgive my ignorance, I have been a bolt action lover all my life and only recently entered into the world of SxS. Below are some pictures of the engraved action by Heinz Funk.

Any information would be appreciated. Value, sought after, rarity, collectible, etc? The stock has been replaced and well executed by a high end rifle maker to Purdy templates.

It could have been made from components acquired from the Sauer shop, or some other, in Suhl just after WWII but I do not see any marks that lead me to believe it originated @ the Sauer facility. Did Hendrik Frühauf say it was engraved by Heinz Funk, or what is the source of info there? I wonder if it was by Franz Schilling?

It does have the screws for the upper & lower scears.

I'd be hard pressed to attached anything Sauer related to this example.

Any idea on the text on the water-table? Is it German, English or Arabic?

Cheers,

Ah, I see now what is on the water-table:

Crown over R-Repair

Crown over U- inspection.

So there must be an additional set of tubes.

Too be brutally honest, it looks like just after WWII someone took some components for a bread-gun then later someone took it & attempted to turn a Sow's Ear into a Silk Purse with a torch.

Interesting, thank you. My understanding is the gunmaker, it is this case, Martin Hagn, sent the action out for engraving by Heinz Funk. I will be contacting seller to determine if this is known, assumed or indicated by seller.

Yeah, I would really like to know if Hagn had a hand in this? If so, I would want it in writing.

Again:

I don't see anything Sauer. But then again everyone always knows much more about things than I do.

See those links & you will see what a bona fide Sauer resembles.

Thank you sir. I certainly see a difference between those SxS and this listing.

To me this looks like a gun that has recently been completely rebuilt, including restocking, reblueing, CCH( not a torch job), and engraving. I believe in the process, the markings on the barrel flats were removed. These markings would have shown the age, maybe the maker, proofing, whether it was choked or not, caliber( gauge), chamber length, and bore diameters. The "Repair" proof on the water table leads to the question, what substantial repair was required? Assuming the barrels were not bored out too much, it is a nice hunting gun, but whether it is a "between the wars" Sauer or even a Sauer doesn't matter any more. It is no longer what it was, it now what it is.
