PGS is Alcan's Plastic Gas Seal which was the first step towards our modern plastic wads. AW is Alcan's Air-Wedge wad, another step along the evolutionary road.
By Reloader's Manual XI Alcan was introducing their one-piece plastic wad, essentially an Air-Wedge with petals and a Felton Blue-Streak inside.
In my teenage years I began my shotshell loading career with 23 grains of Red Dot, a Nitro Card, two Felton Blue Streaks and 1 1/8 ounce of shot in a Federal paper shell. I was shooting trap back then. Then along came the Plastic Gas Seal to replace the Nitro Card and we could drop the Red Dot to 19 grains.
