Hey folks i ran across a Zastava 16 gauge SxS in a pawn shop today and was thinking of purchasing, Its in excellent condition with a price tag of $250.

I'm wondering about the quality of these guns being that they come from eastern europe and i've never run across one before. I had a zastava pistol once...the thing was built like a tank!

I have a Zastava .22 RF bolt action that I am rather fond of. Build quality, workmanship & materials are all very good, and it shoots five shot groups at 50 yards of under 1/2" with several dif brands of inexpensive ammo. It is scoped 4X. Whats not to like?

I have never seen one of their shotguns, but would expect it to built as well as my .22RF You may have found yourself a fair 'deal', but offer them something round first, like two Franklins. Post some pics and tell us more, if you buy it. Curiosity is piqued.

Zastava is a Serbian company that has made guns for over 100 years. They make handguns that were marketed by Charles Daly and Mauser 98 type rifles sold currently by Remington. The shotguns look Baikal like and are probably sturdy, but if it breaks, parts maybe hard to find, but maybe not? As suggested try to deal down and let us know what you think once you have it. Kurt

DOES IT HAVE 2&3/4" CHAMBERS OR 2&9/16?

Built from melted-down T-55 tanks, with wood from surplus sleepers from the "Siberian" Railway. I would look for FEG or Czech ZP-49 if you're into obscure E-European stuff.
PS. Actually the stuff on their site doen't look that bad if you're into Halloweenish Baba Jaga stuff.

Old Zastava SXS doubles from the 1960s were rather nice. Then they changed blued receiver to silver, simplified the bolting, used lesser wood, etc., calling it M75. Still not a bad gun but with a somewhat cheap look to it. Chambers are 70mm. If anything breakes just write a nice letter to the factory and hope for the best; much better chance compared to thousands of old guns with their factories long gone.

Lahti1935A,

If you are looking for an entry level sxs or a knock about, you could do better than the Zastava. For a used gun, you might want to look for a Stevens 311 or a Fox Savage or even an Ithaca NID. For a new entry level sxs, I would look at a CZ Bobwhite or a BSA.

If you are hanging around pawn shops, you can on occasion find a hidden treasure. Do yourself a favor and get a copy of the Blue Book and keep it in the car on your pawn shop trips. Besides giving a "ball park" idea to pricing there is a lot of good information.

If you just want "built like a tank" then go to the tank makers. Look for an IZH-43. I have the IZH27 o/u as a knock about for dog training and loaner. Very solid guns. Can easily digest goose loads all day long.

For the first time, I'm not in agreement with PeteM...Two Zastava SxSs together with duct tape would be a better match for Stevens 311....but perhaps I've only see the old Zastava shotguns... Zastava (Serbian) shotguns are a quality made product, and no relation to Biakal (Rooski)...They have a tiny body and barrels when compared to a 311...There was a field grade at the Syracue gunshow last weekend, asking $225...it didn't sell as there was close to 200 doubles at the show to pick from...It will most likely be at the Rochester show the day after tomorrow...along with 100+ other doubles to drool on...

But dollar for dollar, it's difficult to beat AYA. Their material selection is very good, and for less than the going rate for chopper lump barrels, you can have the whole gun...choppers and all....AYA Matadores can be had for $300

I bought one (16 Gauge, blued action, english stock, choked IM and F) at auction, about NRA excellent in appearance, for $211.00. Discovered it had insufficient headspace. Had that corrected and have enjoyed it ever since.

Finding a used shotgun has insufficient headspace is an interesting experience. It suggests the 16 gauge shot shells for which it was intended (and presumably used!) had rims that were significantly thinner than SAAMI compliant 16 gauge shells.

Hope this helps some.

Warmly,

Kyrie
