Here:

Another:

The rib disappears from view when you are sighting the gun! This isnt that tough. All you see is the bead above the outline of the receiver. Ive never seen a flat swamped rib, not sure how you would pull that off, but, that doesnt mean it hasnt happened. The rib on the pictured LC Smith guns isnt really swamped- you will see the stub rib when sighting.
The gun that started this off isnt, either. You will be able to see that rib when sighting.

The swamped rib was an attempt to get the shooter to focus on the bird, not a rib.

Ted

Until you put a straight edge from the breech to the base of the bead, you really can't say.

That swamped effect seems to be secondary to perhaps how the barrels were struck, rather than an intentional feature?

With my "swamped ribs," the gap in the middle is more like 1/8".

have searched DoubleGun BBS without success for MF catalog reference about their swamped rib. did locate such a reference on NitroExpress; about one third way down the page is a post by DORLEAC (post #248382). it shows two pages of old catalog with fig.#1 showing the central fixture of the one piece rib...along with corresponding text. (unfortunately for me, it might as well be in greek...) http://forums.nitroexpress.com/showflat.php?Cat=0&Number=248297&Main=248074

in this discussion that revolves around nomenclature and more precise definitions of terms, i think it would be useful to differentiate between top & bottom two piece ribs (which might be "swamped" by narrowing their width in mid-section), and these one piece central mounted ribs as used by many french makers.

i have never actually seen any of the ribless english guns (alex martin/a.a.brown). but photos show what i suspect is a central rib of 2-3" at the muzzle, and 6-8" at the breech. can anyone say if those are two piece type, or something more like the french rib?

I owned a Martin ribless, briefly. There is no rib in the middle.

Two pieces, at the breech. Pretty sure it was just a block, 1 piece, at the muzzle.

GB, what are you trying to ascertain regarding MF Ideals. What the swamped ribs look like or what MF called them?

Swamped means sunken, that explains it accurately. The rib is sunken between the two barrels.

Concave refers to the nature of the rib surface. A concave rib can ride pretty high and be concave but not swamped.

The Fench Ideal has an "I" section rib, which incorporates top and bottom rib, connecting via the vertical part of the "I". It is by definition swamped.
