My 15" pull 20ga NID was a little too long to suit me so I had the stock shortened and a pachmyer decel. pad installed to an overall 14.25 pull. Now, nearly everytime I shoot the rt. barrel the safety goes back and I can't fire the left barrel without pushing the safe button forward again.
I figured that maybe I'd shortened it too much so I added a pull-over rubber pad to get the LOP back to what it had been. Still has the problem.
The tension on the safety button seems to be ok. Maybe I'm holding too loosely with my trigger hand and with the soft pad my hand is slipping forward and pulling the safety back upon the recoil of the first barrel.
What do you think; try to get the tension increased on the safety or try a tighter grip?? Any other ideas?...Geo

Try the triggers in reverse order like on a double rifle: rear first then front. I don't prefer an automatic safety; therefore, I would deactivate it by removing the auto bar/lever.

Raimy, thanks for the recommendation. I don't think the automatic safety is the problem because I'm not opening the action between shots. The safety works fine with snap-caps, its just with live shells and recoil that I have the problem. I'll try reversing the trigger pulls, but that is not the way I'd want to shoot the gun...Geo

I thought that it would eliminate some of the possibilities and what was left might be the answer. Well, with the introduction of the snap-cap data, I would guess recoil also. It isn't a 3 position safety is it?

Nah, regular 2 way safety. CAN you increase the tension on the safety?...Geo

Yes. But I'd look closely at where you place your trigger hand. There's no reason it should be near the safety and shorting the LOP shouldn't affect the safety operation or the detent spring.

I might be moving the safety with my thumb during the recoil. It doesn't do it every time...Geo

I have to practice a little to be sure to automatically wrap my thumb over the grip after pushing the safety. Shooting clays with the safety on fire before starting does not do much to develop the right habit. A little practice switching the safety and wrapping the thumb seems to work. You could even take off the barrels and fore end and practice the move now and then during commercials, etc.
Anyway, you could test the gun, making sure your thumb is wrapped over the grip, to see if the safety stays put when you do it that way.

I would remove whatever automatic safety activating bar/device that's there. This will reduce the mass of the safety and recoils' effect on it, any leverage it may be exerting against the safety button as well and also the momentum the safety button will have, and its' tendency to slide to the rear during recoil will be reduced...will that be enough? Who knows...but while your in there you could SLIGHTLY bend the little spring that puts resistance on the movement of the safety to increase it A BIT....If you are not a person who is a close adherent to the "SLIGHTLY" and "A BIT" philosophy of life turn the job over to a good gunsmith it'll only be a few minutes work......I use double triggers all the time and being able to comfortably climb the triggers from rear to front and front to rear is the fastest barrel selection there is for hunting...the best practice is on a skeet field shooting the outgoing bird with the rear trigger and the incomeing one with the open barrel just like you were after feathers...if one uses the safety every time the gun is mounted and calls for the bird with a low gun it's the best practice of all....we'll be hunting again real soon...good luck to you all...Art
