"No kingdom can be secured otherwise than by arming the people. The possession of arms is the distinction between a freeman and a slave. He, who has nothing, and who himself belongs to another, must be defended by him, whose property he is, and needs no arms. But he, who thinks he is his own master, and has what he can call his own, ought to have arms to defend himself and what he possesses; else he lives precariously, and at discretion." James Burgh

If I could see the other side and if it has a cutout for the bottom of the hand and thumb I'd say it was for shooting a shotgun with one hand. Patent, who knows, maybe C.L.Woodward, 1916.

Michael Petrov, I,(WE),wrote a Technicana artical in ssm. Sept-Oct.2001, with extensive Photos of This Woodward'Grip',and others that I have. The Patent date c 1916 & Woodward LONDON are stamped into the left side. This;Little Bit of LONDON Gunmaking History, was handed down from Charles Harry Lawrence, M.B.E. to my Gaffer, Bill O'Brien,Stocker @ Purdeys(1936-1986) and eventually sent to me for Christmas 1990 here in "US". I remembered seeing it attached to a PURDEY 12b db. that had belonged to a former WW1 'Flyer'who was a old friend of Mr Tom Purdey, WW1 Veteran Himself. The 'Flier' had lost his left arm in a Battlefield Crash. He shot many years with the Woodward Grip, and was a welcome Guest on the Scotish Moors. CC/dt

David,

Interesting story, thanks for sharing. It was a lucky guess on the time frame but figured around then a lot of men only had one arm. I cheated and pulled out the 1916 patent book and only had to look at a couple pages and there it was.
