Rubbing Oil.
1/2 Pint of Vinegar, 1/2 Pint Denatured Alcohol, 1/2 Pint of Paraffin oil, add 1 and 1/2 ounce of Rottenstone.
Always shake the container to thoroughly mix the ingredients.Polish with the grain (it's abrasive) leave for 1 hour and then buff with a soft cloth.

Thanks for the formula! I am going to mix up a batch and try it on the next stock. I have been polishing by applying rottenstone with a salt shaker and rubbing it out with paraffin oil and felt

Sal, for a guy who a few short months ago was putting out feelers in the Antipodes to find out if the natives were mixologists (and found out that most of us didn't really even know what was in the off-the-shelf stuff), you've really been spitting out the receipts. Thanks. They're all printed out (unfortunately not on archival paper) and stuffed in glassine sleeve in a notebook. I had the little bit of the old ways which survived the seachange (the "barracks soldier" puttin-in- time formula) but it would never have occured to me that the cutdown ingredients for any finish were more than water or linseed and pumice or rottenstone.
Now about that word "slacum", any idea on the origin or derivation?

I have obtained pretty good results from using drug store mineral oil mixed with rottenstone, applied with old t-shirt cloth.

Thanks for the note and the astute observation.
I have always had some information, but I also never believe we know all the answers, so I guess I will always be trialling and testing.
Been very ill this year, and the light came on to make me realise none of us are immortal. What is the point of anyone taking anything to the grave?
The clever bit is to impart your knowledge before you pop your clogs.
I have always held the belief that anyone who depends on the few dollars a 'secret' recipe of stock oil will bring is pretty desperate to make a dime.
I personally like to admire a piece of well done craftsmanship.
It is not the oils that are the secret it is the application.
