Unequivocally, the image of the lugs with the Crows are the Quality Crowns & Shooting Performance Crowns of Sauer. So it began life under Nummer 62916 and I would assume that Nummer 145812 is also on the water-table?

Cheers,

Raimey, I'm not familiar with Sauer's "Quality Crowns & Shooting Performance Crowns". Could you please explain? The dual serial numbers appear to be only on the barrel though.

Sam,
The two crowns in the last photo (IMG 0008) confirm Raimey's thought that the Drilling is a Sauer product. The Crown S on any barrel means it was proofed for shot, a crown W means it was choked( amount of constriction not shown), the crown U means the drilling underwent a view proof( a detailed inspection and confirmation of dimensions, after definitive proof). The 16 in a circle means it had a normal 16 ga. chamber, which was 2 1/2- 2 9/16" at the time( actually it still is, even though most all guns now have 2 3/4" chambers). The 16/1 is the bore diameter ahead of the chamber, this is about 16.99 mm.

I'm developing loads for a J.P. Sauer hammer drilling built in 1891. The rifle barrel is chambered for the 11.15x52R LK Express. I have just started converting brass using .444 Marlin and .410 brass cartridge cases. The Marlin brass required thinning the rim before the action would close. The .410 brass required only trimming to 52 mm. Can anyone tell me the original bullet weight for this caliber? I'm loading black powder and .428 diameter 200 grain lead bullets, which I have on hand for loading .44-40s, for initial testing. I'm interested in trying .439 diameter 370 grain lead bullets. I've not yet tested any loads and am interested in the experience of others.

Measure the twist then you can either run the Greenhill formula or look up twist rate/bullet length charts on line. From that you can extrapolate a bullet weight. That's how I've done for almost 20 years. Works every time.

I have a cape gun with a rifle barrel in caliber 11,2x51R Kropatschek-Heissig, bottlenecked case based on the .43 Mauser.
Around 20 gram was a usual weight for 11,15mm hunting bullets.
I shoot 295 grain lead bullets cast from an original mold , and 300 grain jacketed bullets for the .44 Magnum.
I suggest to slug the barrel because bore diameters may vary.

Thanks for the info on twist and bullet weight. I've slugged the barrel.
