I learned to canoe at Y Camp Menogyn, on West Bearskin Lake, the summer between 9th and 10th grade. My instructor had canoed all over the world, and was the only guy with his own cedar canoe, which, had also travelled all over the world. Several times during the summer he made a point of taking kids out, and dumping us out of the canoe and into the chilly waters around the Gunflint trail.
He said it was just a fact of life with canoes. That summer I was in a canoe most of my waking hours. I could see using the canoe for transport to go somewhere to jump shoot ducks, but, hunting from the canoe doesnt seem like the brightest move in autumn.
Full disclosure, I never saw the need to jump out of a perfectly good aircraft, either. Momma might have raised a fool, he just wasnt me.
Best,
Ted
