Good reminder Fox. I'll second an Alumacraft Ducker for jump shooting. Stable and quiet.

We generally use a wooden duck boat, built locally to a standard design by the Metis of Delta Marsh. Row, not paddle. Motors are verboten.

My brothers and I paddled every inch of the main fur trade routes across Western Canada, from Thunder Bay at the head of Lake Superior to the Rocky Mountains. I've spent a bit of time in a canoe and know clearly what you can and can't do. Like anything else on the water, the key is to know well your limitations and the limitations of your craft. People die when they push those limits. I don't push them. Not in a canoe and not in a keel boat on the open ocean.

We had both canoes totally restored around 2002. One we did to original finishes and the other we had painted to blend nicely into the marsh, forgoing all the brightwork. Sorry, no pics handy and they are 1400 miles away right now.

King, my father was a Pacific salmon fisherman. Up and down the West Coast every year for decades. From Alaska south......rumours of big Coho and he was there. LOL

As an aside Fox, I had a great aunt who moved to Ketchum in the 1920's and never left. It was a small enough place I suspect she probably knew all involved in your story. Including Ernesto.

One true thing about Mother Nature and her great outdoors- she is an non-discriminating force- if you break her laws: Gravity, think about mountain climbing) force of hydraulics (waterfalls, rip tides) wind shifts -- sky-diving- whatever- she does not discriminate in her wrath- it matters not to her if you are the president of IBM, or a janitor working nights in the Empire State Bldg-- If you "push your luck" in the great outdoors, you will pay the price, sooner or later.

Wonder if she ever met Ezra Pound- born in Ketchum, later, in Paris, along with Gertrude Stein and others, a great influence in Hemingway's early years as a published writer. In 1920, Pound was already in Europe, I don't know if he ever returned to Ketchum.

One of my favorite ways to hunt ducks is to drift a creek or small river and jump shoot them using either my fiberglass "kayak", when alone, or a Gheenoe, when accompanied by a friend. A Gheenoe is much like a square stern canoe, but with a bit flatter bottom. Much more stable for shooting, but doesn't paddle quite as easily as a canoe. Plenty good for drifting with the current, tho'.
