I don't think hunting out of a some small watercraft is necessarily pushing any luck. You understand what you choose, and you use it the best you know how. The best part of the account was that when an emergency came up, there was the will for it to turn out okay.

Experience is a great teacher, and I wouldn't be surprised if the two hunters fired at waterfowl again out of a canoe. They thought they knew about potential stability problems, now they probably approach things a little differently. Mother nature didn't dump them in the water, they did.

I agree with Ted. Canoes are made mostly for traveling. The advantages of a Ducker for safety and utility when duck hunting are almost too numerous to list.

I learned to canoe at Y Camp Menogyn, on West Bearskin Lake, the summer between 9th and 10th grade. My instructor had canoed all over the world, and was the only guy with his own cedar canoe, which, had also travelled all over the world. Several times during the summer he made a point of taking kids out, and dumping us out of the canoe and into the chilly waters around the Gunflint trail.

He said it was just a fact of life with canoes. That summer I was in a canoe most of my waking hours. I could see using the canoe for transport to go somewhere to jump shoot ducks, but, hunting from the canoe doesn�t seem like the brightest move in autumn.

Full disclosure, I never saw the need to jump out of a perfectly good aircraft, either. Momma might have raised a fool, he just wasn�t me.
