The stock looks vaguely familiar. It's an old gun.
It may have been offered for sale last fall in the UK, but I am not certain.
If it is the one I'm thinking of, Dig knew all about it's condition at that time.
Out there doing it best I can.

It didn't leave MacNaughton with a blued receiver.

Contact John Dickson in the UK with the serial number. They may be able to give you information. They were at the Vintagers in PA this past WE.
good luck.

I saw one of these back in 2014. There was a member on this board (Fletched Pair) who was helping Donald Dallas with the book on Dicksons. This is his reply on the 28ga MacNaughton's:
"All these 28g Macnaughtons have short barrels like this. They were built 'in the white' as a batch of small calibre double rifles with 24in barrels but at some point the maker built a few as 28g guns when they went out the door."
The blued receiver is odd and the 24" barrels aren't in vogue.

Notice how, with skillful photography angles, the vendor de-emphasizes the blacked receiver. I would stay away, especially at the price requested, even if the barrels are sound.

I did not know double shotguns even had receivers. I thought they have frames with typically, sidelock or boxlock actions.

Keith, I do not profess to be a terminology expert, but see this link: Hallowell Dictionary Second photo down. Probably "action" is the better term.

It looks like Hallowell got 3 out of 4 correct. Not bad.

Dave, the better to cock the hammers with. Thanks. I didn't know the top lever did the cocking on these. I've always thought MacNaughtons were nice looking guns.

I spoke with Graham Mackinlay recently and he told me that the 28 gauge MacNaughtons were, in fact, made with blued frames. The water table on these guns is marked "Steel". He could not say why they were blued other than it was a special run of some sort. It is accurate to say that the majority of MacNaughton RA's had case colored frames and trigger guards but for some reason these 28 gauges were blued.
Beginning in the mid-1890's MacNaughton RA's were manufactured with barrel cocking and at that time the need for the leverage provided by a long toplever was no longer necessary.

It's a pretty little thing. Would make a great quail or woodcock gun, if choked right. It would be a simple matter to have a leather covered pad added to get the LOP up where it would need to be.
