Thanks Stan! The South is a great, great place and southerners are great, great people. I miss it, but mostly the people.

My Wife was an Illinois Girl but she became a true Southerner real fast. If I try & rib her about her being born a Yankee, she'll tell me real quick she wasn't ever a Yankee, she was from Southern Illinois.
She, in fact, worked long & hard to dig up a Confederate that would allow her membership in the UDC (United Daughters of the Confederacy). She finally found one as she can get in the UDC through Uncles & such, does not have to be a direct descendant.

The SCV and the UDC, and the DAR, are great organizations. Well founded and well represented today.

Southern IL is night and day compared to what most people think of when they think of Illinois i.e. Chicagoland. Very different culture, politics, etc.
True fact: Cairo, IL is 30 miles farther south than Richmond, VA.

Stan; I am of course in full agreement with that statement. I am currently serving as Camp commander of the B F Cheatam Camp 72 of the Starnes Division of the TN division of the SCV. Interestingly Starnes was the commander of the 4th Tenn Volunteer Cavalry which one of my Great Grandfathers served under for the duration of the war. Starnes was shot & killed by a sniper during the Tullahoma Campaign about 15 miles from where I presently live. McLemore then assumed command for the rest of the War. This cavalry unit worked very closely with N B Forest & I am quite certain G Grandfather Fulks was with Forrest when he chased Able Strait across North Alabama & then tricked him into surrendering without a battle.
Both of these organizations are doing all within our power to set a lot of records straight & to honor those Great Men for standing up for they believed was Right, & it WAS NOT all about Slavery.

" & it WAS NOT all about Slavery."
well piper, agreed...but, lets be more direct here...without slavery, there would have been no war...
slavery represented an economic power, that free labor could not hope to compete against...
plus, slavery anywhere, anytime is an evil, sinful practice...
facts are, the leaders of the south had plenty of time and opportunity to rid themselves of it...they choose not to do so...they/we suffered the consequences...

We don't get the summertime blahs around he'ah. When the work's done we go to the beach or a sandbar on the river ................ and chill. I prefer the sandbar, myself. Lots of boats, good conversation, and fine Southern GA and SC conservative voters. Flyover country ....................... Trump country.
SRH No tatts in sight. You must have a better class of rednecks up there...Geo

Ive been living with an Alabama girl for a few years and spending some time down there. The experience has made me aware of the enormous cultural differences between the N & S. Starting out, I didn't know the differences were so big. Honestly, its been a struggle at times and there are clashes of basic values. It really is comparable to dating someone from another country. I like the South and Southerners. Yall know how to have fun. On the other hand, I know I would never quite belong there. The paradox is, the more I get to know the South, the less I understand it.

Is it private?
