I would like to hear of suggestions concerning the cleaning of hand oils or general hunting grime from stocks and metal prior to oiling and storing the firearm. What are you using that is mild enough so as not to damage the finish on the wood? what is your general cleaning routine? Thanks in advance!

I use saddle soap, but any mild soap would do, I think...Geo

I don't use any product to clean hand oils, sweat , etc. from guns before oiling the metal down. I wipe them very briskly with a clean, dry cloth to remove as much loose stuff as possible. Then, I wipe down the metal with a cloth impregnated with Eezox. This is for guns that will be used relatively soon, again. Different stuff for guns going into medium to long term storage.
The wood gets a coat or two of Renaissance Wax every so often.
Understand that this is in reference to the exterior fo the gun. Much more attention is given the interior parts.
Works for me.

I wipe down Judy's and my firearms down using a rag impregnated with Ballistol - it wipes off fingerprints, etc. as it oils the exterior. Ballistol can be used on both metal and wood.

I won a bottle of Clenzoil a couple years ago. I wonder if it can be used similarly.

Stan, I use Clenzoil in the same manner as the Ballistol product. I've found them to both work well. Karl

Thanks, Karl. I've been hesitant to try it. But, I will on your recommendation.

Clenzoil . I use it for bore cleaning, exterior wipe down of wood and metal. It seems to dry leaving a coating that repels water. It can be used on leather as well. Great all purpose product.

Drew, do you still rub lemon oil into your gunstocks occasionally? I think I remember you saying many years ago that you did that to counteract the dry desert air's drying effects on the wood.
