Victorian game engraving was, I'm told often done from pictures. Being and English gun, you'd think it must be European birds, but if done from pictures who knows?...Geo.

The whimbrel is a wader in the large family Scolopacidae.
It is one of the most widespread of the curlews,
breeding across much of subarctic North America,
Asia and Europe as far south as Scotland

Because the curlew's bill is longer than the whimbrel's. In picture comparisons the bird in the engraving much more closely resembles the curlew.
