The best thing to keep in the back of the truck for a dog that gets hit by a skunk is the dog.
It's smart to have an extra outboard shear pin, but replace it right away when you use the spare. I once had to do a long slow ride on the electric trolling motor and the battery started to fade before I got to where I needed to go. I was lucky it was only about a two mile walk/jog to get the truck.
I have a 22 short rifle, but they should have specialized slow twist barrels. I think just use quality standard velocity 22 LR ammo in a 22 LR barrel for the best accuracy.
My thing to expand in the upcoming season was mentioned by Brent. I dislike counting on it, but decent GPS apps for the phone not only help locate boundries and see topography, but it can sure help finding unmarked two rut access roads when it's pitch black out.
When ever I wear waders, I like to have my misc. odds and ends in a separate bag or back pack. I felt the feeling a couple of times when a light few pounds of things like shells, etc. can make it surprisingly hard to get a little air when I stepped into a hole.
Ziplocs and sturdy garbage bags are a must. Check the emergency truck bag now and then, don't assume it's as remembered and everything in there fresh and ready. Fun topic Stan.

Miller, those greasy CIL .22 bullets were standard issue at military competitions, in 100-round boxes in the late 40s and 50's. Our high school cadet team shot at the Armouries indoor range every Friday afternoon, issued a box each week to take home. We competed against the three service branches, police and firemen, using .22 Lee-Enfields, open sights.

Craig, Even standard velocity LR .22 will almost always leave a bushy tail high up on a tree branch, where a short will almost always knock his little ass right off the branch, and save you a hour of rock throwing. .22 short out of a Remington 552 is way more than accurate enough for that type of work.
Believe me, finding water in the woods, and proceeding with the evil job of deskunking out there keeps everyone in the neighborhood, not to mention the house you share, much happier. The second bath can follow at home. It is far less evil if the first coat of skunk juice has been removed out there. The skunk kit has a very good pair of rubber gloves in it.
Best, Ted

I do not now recall how many years I used those standard Vel .22 LR for hunting nor any idea as to the number of Squirrels they put on the "ground". Lodging was simply not an issue with which I was bothered. When one hits a squirrel there is no way to know whether it will fall toward you are away from you (I've seen them fall in both directions using identical loads) so no way to determine if a limb is going to interfere on the way down or whether would be best to hit it with a 30 grain Short or a 40 grain LR.
I took this old Mossberg in on a trade back when I was young & didn't know any better. I immediately found out the only way I could ever make it worthwhile was to shoot it a lot. This I did & of all the guns I have ever owned this one likely "Earned" its keep more than any of the others. I could likely have invested hundreds of dollars in a high-grade target rifle & added hundreds of dollars more in fitting a premium scope & used only Precision Match grade ammo & cut the group size in half. As it was I may have had as much as $20.00 in this Mossberg & added a 3-7 variable Bushnell .22 scope for less than $20.00 several years later. As to accuracy I never really seriously measured group sizes for it. Using those CIL Greasy .22 LR I could crack walnuts or acorns all day with it or drill a squirrel in the eyeball.
Using shorts I was doing extremely well if I could put one in a Punkin at the same ranges. so which to use was simply not an issue.
Would truly love to know what the "Theory" is that the LR will leave more squirrels hanging on a limb than will shorts. Seems to me this is more of a factor of the tree itself than of the cartridge it is shot with. I suppose one could carry a .600 Nitro Express & blow the poor little critter out beyond the tree, but even then he might lodge in a neighboring tree.
To me, this is one of those issues which "Sound Good IF You Say it Real Fast" but in my experience won't hold up to scrutiny. .

Ps...and don't mess around with jOe That right there represents the sum total knowledge you have posted, here. Good tip, but, most guys have it down pat before they start kindergarten. I imagine you rediscover it several times a month, however. Best, Ted

Squirrels are rodents- "tree rats" and in MI there is no closed season on red squirrels- fox squirrels from mid-Sept to end of March. Why get all upset over a dead or dying squirrel, anymore than a raccoon or possum-? My farmer friend near Remus (MI) has "put the tune" on many red squirrels that are all over their bird feeders- used a older open sighted Rem 531 single shot BA and shorts- head shots only-- instant death--what's wrong with that? I have only had 2 porcupine dog incidents, both with the same dog. Neither required a vet visit, leatherman did the job. Once she only picked up about a dozen quills and the other time maybe 60 or so. We were far out in the field both times. The second time I ended up the worse off as she bit me while I was pulling quills from the roof of her mouth. Never slowed that dog down a bit. She would go after about anything, Coyotes, raccoons, opossums, one skunk too. The most driven dog I have ever been around. She kept things interesting that is for sure. I miss her daily but I have her off spring to soothe the pain.
I need to replace my EMT gel but that stuff works great on k9 lacerations.
