Peter B. There are two different live bird games. Box birds are those described earlier in this thread where birds are placed in a box and sprung on the call of pull. The other is Columbaire where a bird thrower launches the bird by hand. Columbaire can be fraught with bribes of the throwers who are able to trick up the birds to make the shots tougher or easier.
Guess we will just have to take our vacation money and go shoot box birds in Mexico, Italy, Spain etc where the competitions are still a matter of great local pride (and big prize money.)
I struggle to see why shooting pest birds is an issue when I can do the same thing at the local feedlot in similar numbers. What happens if we were to switch the boxed birds to starlings or rats. City people are mostly crazy - bitch about the pigeon manure, want the pigeons to be removed, but don't want them harmed. They do like to watch the falcons take them in the city, guess the falcons are more humane, ripping them to bite sized pieces.
