Entirely possible that he has. He talked about it on the SSM BB. But he was well aware that it was not an American-made gun. Marlin, owning the name, had guns made in both Italy and Spain that they called LC Smiths. I believe all the 28's were Spanish. By Zabala, IIRC.

I'm not stalking Dave, but he's hard to miss. What gets to me is that most of his (bizarre) claims are based on "personal conversations" with Ithaca and Hunter Arms employees, John Houchins, Col. Brophy, Walt Schiessl; all of whom are gone and can't confirm or deny his assertions.
Tom Archer, Townsend Breeden, Jim Stubbendieck, the late Dick Miller and others know more about Smith guns and Hunter Arms history than "The L.C. Smith Man" has made up.

Drew, if you continue to the 2nd page of that SSM BB thread, you'll see that we identified it as a Lefever Nitro for him. But you can't deny, with all the embellishment--whether you like it or not--that it's "one of a kind". smile

Dewey helped Dave out with his image. Apparently it is the subgauge tube that was made by Whitworth

L.C. Smith of Syracuse was in business in 1880.
Hunter Arms Fulton-built L.C. Smith guns began in 1889/1890...?

So...playing along with this insanity...purely for giggles...how is it a gun made in 1898 was "pre-production?"
