I bought the Ithaca above knowing it was a field grade, and the seller was up front about it as well. I bought it first because it is a good gun, and second because I liked the engraving...Geo

Depends on who did the upgrade and is it marked as such.

PS. 16 Gauge Sterly upgraded to early DE grade. Gournet was the engraver and Dan Rossiter a member of the ACGG did everything else.

Wow Tut!
Here's a less spectacular but nice and dainty no-name Belgian .410 of mine that someone went to the effort to do up to the '9's.

John, tut's is pretty nice but that .410 is not slouch! Have we seen that in the "show us your SxS" thread??

Yeah James. Shamelessly used same photos. I have to admit though that I have very big hands so the perspective has a bit of bias. The gun is 4 lbs 9 as I recall.

Geo. I think you need to have it engraved like a A1 Special.

There are so many upgraded or refinished Winchesters on the market I go into the deal thinking any graded or high condition example is one. Then work to prove its real. When in doubt pass.

I wont pay true value for a genuine high grade gun no matter how good the upgrade is. But to me a upgrade is just a fancy gun not rare in the least way.

If you want a Fox that looks like a Parker Bros. get a Philadelphia Arms Co.

That's a pretty .410 hammergun, JB. Regardless the size of your hands, that's a dainty little action. It has some unusual characteristics, but very nice.

I own two upgrades. One is a Model 12 28ga conversion gun, nicely restocked with an engraved silver grip cap and a vent rib. No one would mistake it for an original. The other is an L C Smith 20ga, upgraded by Doug Turnbull, supposedly when he was trying to establish himself in the trade. Restocked in great walnut with an ebony inlay on the fore end, tastefully engraved in a pattern that LCS never used, including some gold wireline inlay, leather covered pad, wonderful case colors. Turnbull stamped his "DT" logo on the water table, so there will never be any confusion. I didn't buy it specifically because of the upgrade. I bought it because it's a very pretty smallbore shooter with straight grip and 28" barrels, choked .006" in both barrels. And I would gladly trade it for that .410 Belgian hammer gun, but only if it has 28" barrels.

"Proof mark restruck in the wrong place is a big one"

In Europe this would land you in jail. Is it legal in the US?
