Did you ever think about buying an upgraded gun, knowing it was an upgrade being sold as an original? Somehow it just seems to go against the grain. I dont think this was a forged upgraded gun, to dupe a buyer as much as someones decision to get what he wanted, bar the cost. It might have been done by Pachmayr, slim chance it was done by the factory years after being made or one other gunsmith I know of.

Looking at a high grade gun, in near perfect condition. I am absolutely certain it is an upgrade. No factory records to confirm it. Everything is done to a perfect level which I would expect from the real thing. But I have found three very minor details which are not right. One I might give it a pass but three is too much. Proof mark restruck in the wrong place is a big one, two numbers of serial number double struck from the freaking up, and one other mistake.

Still, Im still thinking about buying it even with the warts. I intend to shoot it, not stick it in a safe as a collectible. To me its an upgrade which has no collectible value. Price is about what I am willing to pay. But as a shooter it is a looker and functions perfectly. A boob job on a gun is what my buddy calls it. Nice looking, but not real. But if I buy it I intend to somehow acknowledge it as an upgrade. Maybe have the word upgrade ?engraved on the gun so its visible when taken apart, but not in plain sight. Might just shoot it and let the kids worry about.

If it's not for collecting, but for hunting, how is it "not real"?

Without knowing or seeing the gun in question, it sounds like it is a high quality, high condition gun. If the price has had the collect-ability factor removed, is less than the cost of having the work done yourself to buy and upgrade, looks the way you want and is a price that you think provides value for money and are willing to pay, what's the problem?

I'm asking that for real. What's the problem?

I wouldn't pay the price of an unaltered, original gun, but certainly somewhere between the value of the gun in its original, unaltered grade and what an original unaltered gun would cost in the new configuration. Somehow I get the feeling that the seller is going to insist that the gun is in unaltered original condition and ask for a premium price in accordance.... Then it will depend on how much you want the gun...
I agree with what James says about the costs of upgrade versus the value of the gun afterwards.

Upgrades are done, as I am constantly told, so that the upgrader can lose money when he gets rid of it. I see no reason to deny the current owner his satisfaction.

Out there doing it best I can.

On the other hand, I've daydreamed about having one of my Fox pin guns worked on to fake a high grade Parker. I've daydreamed about a few movie stars too, but neither one is going to happen...Geo

I am a bit curious about that, George. Th AH Fox guns have the rotary top bolt, like the L.C.Smith and the Ithaca NID-- But the Parkers, with the exception of the later production Trojan grades, all have the "Doll's Head" feature-- So, once you crack open a Fox that has been "re-done" into an "Old Reliable" configuration, how would you explain that?? Just wondering, is all.

Many years ago, I heard some sound advise about collecting Parkers-- "If you stick with the Trojan Grade Parkers, you'll never get "stuck" with an upgrade.

For years, I often wondered about some of the Parkers sold by the late Herschell Chaddick-ditto Jack Puglisi-- but they are both "gone from the market", at least Chaddick is-- can't prove this, just a suspicion. But, all foxes tend to be a bit suspicious by nature, right? RWTF

Both of those gentlemen have met their reward, Fox. Jacks son is still at it, but, is not the dealer his Father was.

Fox I was just talking about the engraving. Every time I take one of my Fox pin guns on a dove shoot someone remarks on the nice Parker I'm shooting. The intent would not be to deceive...Geo
