I have been loading 7/8 loads for my 12 and 16 gauge guns for years and shoot mostly targets in cold weather in Alaska. ALL loads are dirtier when it is cold up here. As far as bloopers...I haven't had any.
I have used 7/8 ounce loads on chukars for dog training and for sharptails with success. Don't get me wrong, though, I have found that I get more dead birds with 1-1/8 ounce loads (rather than winged birds/cripples.)
Cheers!

"Little powder much lead. Shoots far kills dead." This saying to the best of my knowledge was attributed to William Greener, Father of W W Greener. It did reference shotguns & not Rifles. At the time it originated Choke Boring had not been developed, shotguns were cylinder bore. Consequently, unless an extremely small size shot was used pattern density fell by the wayside long before penetration. It was extremely good advice at that time & still has many applications today, even with choke bored guns. Burrard discussed this principle at length in his book "The Modern Shotgun". With this method, pattern & penetration can be brought closer together than by many other loads. He recommended this method primarily for birds of the size of Pheasants & Ducks or larger & a minimum shot size of #4, (US #5). This was of course with Lead shot.

I do not know what Rifles you are referring to. In my around 65 years of being interested in firearms of all sporting types (along with a few others), the trend in rifles has been toward longer &/or Fatter cases holding more powder. In the black powder days, big bores were used with heavy bullets at low velocities. With smokeless powders bores began to shrink, bullets became lighter & velocities went up. That trend has not stopped yet from my viewpoint.

Oh, I agree the trend has not stopped. it is not unlike the cartridges for shotguns getting longer and longer (though maybe that has stopped). But the old mantra is slow and heavy gets it done every time. Those of us that shoot game or long distance with 19th century rifles have to keep reminding the more fashionable that it still works as well as ever.

7/8ths in a 12 works just fine for me at trap. I like it a lot. All that money your saving it might be time to make a donation to the website. Are you privy to who donates and who doesnt?

That load won't fill a Remington hull anyway, the crimps will be dished to the point they leak shot. Nitro27 hulls are in the recipe from Hodgdon, and are what I have a thousand of. I need to use them up, and then I can switch hills.

I did miss that thread: No interest in that debate. Personal decision to donate or not. I have before, and will again, because of the wealth of real information here and the value of it to me.
