I prefer the understated English decorative style, but you have to admire the bold artistry you can find on Continental guns!

Gunwolf, NO ONE ever consistently produced guns displaying higher levels of craftsmanship than those born in Germany. And this Merkel is an outstanding example. Though the engraving is not quite what I prefer I am certain the internal parts and fitting are near perfection.

Interesting checkering pattern. I have a new Italian S x S that has what looks to be very nearly the same style. I kinda like the pattern. Thanks for the posting.  SRH

Thats not just a well done flat top skip line checkering job but the skip lines are almost twice the other rows size to be more noticeable. The effect is very different. That is a very interesting looking gun. Continental engraving can be bold.

The receiver shape is quite similar to a Simson Suhl of mine, but without the elaborate decorations.
can you tell us when yours was manufactured?

I think the gun is beautiful! The engraving the checkering and the carving are flawless.
I happen to like that style of decorating a gun.
