Back to gun cleaners: I picked up an aerosol can of something called Stil Crin Special Gun Oil which; according to the can, is made in Brescia, Italy. A squirt down the barrel and a wad of kitchen roll pushed through and it fetches most of the muck out and only requires a pass or two with the bronze brush and another couple of squirts and passes and the barrel is clean. It even seems to shift black powder residue with little effort. I got the can at a place when on holiday. I will be down that way again soon and hope to get a dozen cans. Best stuff I've ever used. Lagopus..

For use in the field and at gun shows, I use piece of sheepskin saturated with RIG. I keep it in a Ziplock bag to avoid picking up grit. Rig is not a lubricant, but it keeps rust off very well.

for cleaning after blackpowder loads, the wet wipes sold by Chlorox work great. Then a dry patch or two and some oil.

Ballistol ... and toilet paper In some old clunkers, vintage army stuff, for the sake of nostalgic smell if nothing else. Cheers, Jani

For shotguns, an oily rag pull-through the barrels after each day's use and barely oily wipe of the rest, served no-rust all seasons in arguably saltiest gunning environment on the continent.

RIG....Rust Inhibiting Grease. Why is this grease not considered a lubricant??? Its grease, right. Please explain...

But rocky mtn bill also came here a couple years ago and actually stated that the tiny gears and bearings in a MMC Electric Checkering tool require no lubrication at all. Imagine that... tiny precision bearings and gears running at an input speed of 17,000 RPM under load cutting checkering in hard seasoned walnut... with no lubrication. Scary to think that a guy like that taught our children for a living. Your tax dollars at work!

My barrels get cleaned with hoppes no.9, then lightly oiled with either Ballistol or Clenzoil inside and out. I used to use Birchwood Casey Sheath, but it was discontinued and replaced with Barricade which I didn't care for. I've settled on Ballistol or Clenzoil because it's safe for wood. I carry the pretreated packets in my gun cases for the necessary wipe down if needed as previous posters have suggested. Karl
