I meant I hoped the damage from mudslides would be minimal.

I read somewhere the Calif legislature passed a bill in 2016 to do fire break cuts, bi partisan, so both parties in favor. Gov Brown vetoed the bill

Thanks for the well wishes. I personally am not in any area affected other than smokey skies. That has cleared well in the past few days.
To the comments about building where it's more appropriate, I don't think there's any areas of CA where anyone would want to live that didn't have fire, flood, or earthquake issues. They made that into "Feinstein's Forest" (Mojave National Preserve), the least visited part of CA. With the drought being a cyclical thing fires have always been a part of these places. The coastal range near Malibu inland to I-101 has burned every decade or so, sometimes twice that.
It seems to me that the solution is an engineering issue. In this case, materials and construction methods that are fire proof. Houses are made of fire fuels today. Attic spaces are designed to suck in air at the soffits and exhaust at the crowns of the roof. This sucks in fire embers and lights a house from inside the attic. It's a design that has to be fixed.

I believe there're many things that are appropriately designed and constructed of materials that are reliably fire resistant. I noticed NASA released a few images from space that seemed to show quite a bit more fuel is available for fires in California than just houses.
If I lived in a conventionally constructed house in California that was destroyed by fire, I'd be devastated regardless. It must be a wrenching feeling to watch fire approach from miles away with no hope to stop it, because the fuel it has overwhelms the capability of fire fighters.

Makes me mad when the wildfires are blamed on climate change rather than buildups of natural fuels in fire-evolved ecosystems. Nice to see the magnificent 24,000 acre Dangermond Preserve recently saved from development by The Nature Conservancy will eemploy prescribed burns on its grasslands.

I too hope things improve for California. I hope that after this passes people will stick to building where the land wants you to...Geo interesting point Geo, wouldn't you agree that the same should apply along the east and gulf coasts as well?

Makes me mad when the wildfires are blamed on climate change rather than buildups of natural fuels in fire-evolved ecosystems. Isn't it really a combination of multiple variables? Even implementing the sound policy culling the fuel for the fires, prolonged periods of drought still makes everything dry and more susceptible to fire.

The wet dry cycles have been going on forever. The 2000-yo fire-scarred redwoods show that. But now our fire suppression has allowed silver fir to build up around them to the point where the next fire may kill many of them. Other variables of course such as roads and introduced plants.
