The best recoil aid I've ever used is the shooters shirt made by Evoshield. It has a pliable soft insert pad which is vacuum packed when you first get the shirt. You have to take the pad out of it's packaging then put it in the shirt and mount your gun several times in your normal shooting position. The pad forms to your gun and body & then hardens. This spreads the recoil over a large area and you have no felt recoil when using it.
I've used these shirts on several Argentina dove hunts where I've shot over 10,000 rounds and never had any shoulder hurt or discomfort of any sort. I have also used most of the other strap-on type pads down there and would not recommend them based on my experiences with them.

I've always made a point of doing a LOT of shooting before a SA dove trip, and I've found a toughened up shoulder is better than any pad. The one time I used a pad it was a P.A.S.T. shoulder harness like a brazier. The pad is very thin but distributes the recoil over a larger area. I did not feel it interfered with my shooting in the least...Geo

Since my first attempt at the EvoShield in Cordoba I haven't used anything in Argentina to
attenuate recoil, other than the standard leather lace-on pad on my 687 SPII Sporting, which is there only to increase LOP. Never have had a bruise or hurting shoulder. I agree that the more you normally shoot the less you're going to notice the recoil from 1200-1500 rounds a day. How you mount the gun and how well it fits you is more important than all the rest of the recoil attenuating devices, IMO, with exception for shoulder injuries of course.

Microcell pads weigh almost nothing and absorb more recoil than any pad I have used. The sides do not finish quite as nice as the typical rubber pad. I have no connection to the seller nor the pad. I posed this question last year because of a torn rotator cuff. Although I have an LT20, it's a bit light so I bought a Winchester SX3 20ga/28" because I'm trying to avoid surgery. The SX3 is very soft shooting, seems softer than the LT20. I also found some very light 20 ga loads from NobelSport and Clever, 3/4oz of 8s at 1200fps. I got both of those loads from Gamaliel before they sold their internet business to Brownell's, and I like them on doves but I wouldn't shoot 8s on our wild quail. I have also been shooting some 1oz 20ga black powder loads of 6s in a 12ga hammer gun with ChamberMates and the recoil is minimal. I like the light 20ga loads and I liked the 20ga SX3 so much that I found a 12ga that is tolerable with 2-3/4" duck loads.
