I just received a text from a very good friend that Ken Hurst passed away last night. I have no further information.

Damn. That sucks. Ken was a good guy. Never met him in person, but talked on the phone with him a few times and he recut the engraving on a old Coggie I had a few years ago. I enjoyed talking on the phone with him, I’m not trying to be insensitive here, but he sounded like a real life Foghorn Leghorn. I can still hear him telling me how much better “carbonia” blue was as compared to regular regular blacking. Every time I say “carbonia blue” I say it in a foghorn leghorn voice. :-).

Every loss like this really hurts. The talent bench among crafts and professions seems to get shorter by the day. Skilled and generous hurts even more. I hope he got out easy.

Sad to hear that. Ken once worked as an engraver in Estill, SC at The Outfitter, owned by Andrew Harper. That is my earliest recollection of him.
Another good one gone. RIP, Ken.

We spoke several times by phone, especially when he was looking into resurrecting Lefevers. A gentlemen who'll be missed.

Ken did an engraving of one of my favorite German Shorthairs on a sidepanel of a Rem M 17, just because I had posted a message here about the dog dying suddenly. He helped me with some other stuff after that. A totally class guy and a superb engraver. What a loss to mankind.

Ken was a pleasure to talk with. He traded me an engraving job on a small frame Greener Martini .22 for a Martini Cadet .218 Bee, which he wanted for a friend of his. I always thought I got far more in value than the rifle was worth. I treasure that .22 and hope to pass it on to my son. It's a very nice memento of a fine gentleman.
