My local farm supply store has their Diana, Kemen, Remington Gun Club, Federal Top Gun and Estate Game and Target shells on sale for $3.99 a box in case lots. Which ones should I stock up on for informal target shooting and maybe a few doves?

If a reloadable hull is important, the Remington Gun Club is the best choice of those listed. Reloading economics is the big problem now. The Federal Top Gun is an excellent shell in my experience - quality control being better than the Gun Club, but it isn't really a good shell for reloading.

Buy as many shells as you can afford, and do it now. $40/flat will soon be long ago and far away.

Kemen has 5% antimony shot, but I purchased 10 flats of shells yesterday at Bass Pro Shops for 2.99. Wally World and Academy were matching the price.

At $40/case, you might want to buy all you will need for the next several years. My reloads now cost about $4.35 for materials. Its less expensive to shoot these promo's.

The Estates and Remington Gun Club have worked well for me.

WAL-MART had Winchester promo's this week at $39.95 per case. They have also been O.K.

I bought a few flats of Winchester Super-X 'game loads' at a Bass Pro about three years ago. Super-X used to be their premium brand, now it's their 'promo' load. Steel head el cheapo stuff, made in Mexico or the Phillipine Islands.

Bass Pro seemed to have stored the stuff near the sea, perhaps hoping it would mellow like Scotch.

Many rusty heads, and when the stuff was fired it gave off a sour stench.

Have not bought a Winchester shell since.

Those Promo shells are good for making noise but that's about all.

What do you mean by that? They knock things down as well as anything else, you can't argue otherwise. Cheap but effective. You been talking to Squire G?
