I am hoping someone has seen this picture online and can point me in the right direction....I came across a picture of an L.C. Smith stock that had the cracks and chips behind the side locks. The gentleman planed down or sanded about an 1/8" of the wood around the sidelock out to the point. He then took a piece of wood that was close in grain and glued it to the stock. He then had to inlet the sidelocks and blend the patch to a point but it was nearly undetectable. I have looked for a week now but can not find that image. If anyone has seen this and can point me in the right direction I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks in advance.

Try the picture trail links embedded in this page:

Plenty of info on the phenomenon there.

Here you go

That repair however does not address the origin of the problem, which is the head of the stock

Dewey sent me the same photos that KY Jon posted the link to above, in response to my inquiry about restoring stock cheeks that had been checkered, which should not have been, on my HE Fox.

It convinced me that he is the man to do the job for me. When I'm ready to give it up for long enough to leave it with him until he can get to it, he will be the one who does it, without question.

There are possibly others who can do that same level of work, but he did contact me and I really appreciate that.

Dewey Vicknair is an incredibly good gunsmith. He is just as talented working metal as wood. It's a shame he stopped posting here.

I was going to post his photos, but then I remembered that he deleted all of the photos he had posted here in the past. His departure was a great loss to this forum.

Seeing how its done helps but his skill level is at the very highest. If you dont know what to look for you just dont see it. Unlike the other job which looks like it was done with a weed wacker and can be seen ten feet away as a bad job. But done right cost money. Its just nice to know where and who to send stuff to.

Dennis Earl Smith (The Stock Doctor) also does this repair. I have discussed it with him regarding a couple of Parkers with pinned heads but have not yet had the work done.
