Looking for a nice place to stay not far from the tourist junk. Finally talked the wife into a trip so.... nothing fancy but not "camping" either. AC would be nice.
Anyone got any recommendations?? I am sure this has been on the board before but I struck out with the search. It wouldn't let me try a second time!!

Try this website: http://www.booking.com I booked several hotels in the UK, Ireland and Scotland for a 3 week trip this fall. You do not have to pay in advance, and the cancellations are more liberal than most. Currently they list over 500 hotels in the area. When are you going and which airport are you arriving. My favorite is "Lawn Guest House" in Horley, near Gatwick. 10 minute walk to the train station and about 45 minutes into London. Hot breakfast. Quiet setting. Serves me in going to and fro. Oh, about 45-50 BPS. No smoking. Very clean and safe.

Last year, my wife and I stayed in the Montana Hotel. I know, strange name for a London hotel, but it worked out great. About a block from a tube station whereby you can get to about anywhere in London. Here's the link: http://www.montanahotel.co.uk/home.phpWe went in late March, early April for a week so we got the off season rate, about 69 GBP per night as I recall.

Thanks guys, we are going in October. The "monster" is out for fall break! Want to be near the tube and hit most of the "tourist" stuff. If I am nice about that, I might get a 1/2 day to look at gun stuff!! Looking for something with some "English" flair and not just a hotel room.

My wife and I went with another couple 2 years ago and rather than stay in a hotel we rented a two bedroom apartment. It was great. I felt very at home and it was less expensive than a hotel for the four of use. Try "London Connection". I think that was what we booked through. We stayed in Chelsea near the Sloane Square tube which is very convenient to everything.
PS - the only shop I made it to was the Beretta store which had some very nice specimans on the 3rd floor.

I stepped off a plane in Heathrow in Nov 02 with a free day and simply asked about lodging at a "information" booth in the airport. It's not the best way to go, but I ended up staying in a very new and upscale business taylored hotel south of the Tower Bridge. This area is not "touristy" but is close by bus or the "Underground" or "tube" to most tourist destinations. The Tower of London was a short walk across the Tower Bridge and I jumped a red bus that allowed me to get off at all the tourist locations. The Tower of London is a biggie for armor, early weapons, crown jewels, etc. A "must do" in my book. I also walked 'the Abbey' and Picadilly Circle. Didn't have much time so I spent much of it on the open top deck in the drizzle with my Carhart collar turned up to my Gus Stetson. Eventually, I was spotted by other American tourists and they joined me in the drizzle on top.

I lived in London a little over 30 years ago from 1974 to 1976. I returned on "Holiday" in 1981 and went to my favorite Hungarian Restaurant on the corner of Queensway and Bayswater on the North side of Hyde Park. They had the best Chicken Kiev you ever put in your mouth when I had lived there. My return visit, however, found the Chicken Kiev was nothing more than fried chicken on the bone with butter poured over it. I learned that one can not recommend anything as the changes are to dramatic. I lived in Denham, a little village about 20 miles west of London and worked in West 1, Mayfair, at Grosvenor Square. Purdey's was just down the street on South Audley and Holland and Holland was just off Berkelley Square on Burton Street. Rigsby was on Pall Mall and the list goes on. All were within walking distance at lunch. Give me a call when you come up for dove season and I'll give you all my outdated information.
