Chris,

It took six months to receive my Shotgun Certificate from the Thames Valley Police. I had a little 20 bore Bernardelli Brescia hammer gun I had brought with me from Italy and there was a Commander at the command that did not have a Shotgun Certificate though he had a Rizzini 12 bore that I took off his hands for near nothing. Took the thing down, wrapped it in "The Times" and carried it on the train from Marylebone to Denham. Sad part is that while I was off to Innsbruck for the Winter Olympics in 1976 my house was "burgled" and I lost everything including the shotguns. I called the police and they said to take it up with my insurance company. When I told them that I had lost several guns they had CID there within 30 minutes. Nothing was ever recovered.

You think Austin will keep "Kerr Dog" in line. I saw Cabby Boone with young Hillary at Wilmore this past sunday.

If you are here on the evening of October 2nd, you can come to my book launch in the Long Room at Purdey's. Then I'll take you pigeon shooting on 5th if you like - I'm going anyway.

Chris-

I've not been back since 1970 but believe that you will still likely find the Bayswater and Lancaster Gate tube stops within easy reach of your gunshop destinations and all of the tourist stuff. Back then Bayswater had more than a few Indian restaurants and a smattering of small pensions and hotels. As you head further east along the northside of the park toward Lancaster Gate and Edgeware Road tube stops, things became a bit more upscale, but nothing like the east, south and west side of the park-Mayfair, Knightsbridge, Kensington, etc.

Another alternative but still very accessible location is Hampstead at Hampstead Heath-your wife will adore you for booking her a place nearby, and you can take the "little monster" to the heath to practice his dribbling. Same area-another tube stop-St. John's Wood. Delightful area and shops.

Suggest you do some word searches for pensions and B&B's in these areas if they interest you. Since you are going in off season, rates may not be as dear as now.

Chris,

You lucky duck! Enjoy England. That is one of my true dream trips--I have to wait until my littlest gets a bit older. Take lots of pictures.

Momma found a place in Bloomsbury area. Close to Russel Square. Don't plan on spending a lot of time there anyway!

Looks really close to the gun destinations as well.

Small Bore, I would LOVE to take you up on that. Have to check the schedule but it looks like we might miss by a couple of days. Have to wait for the monster to get out of school!

Checking out a Gordon Ramsey restaurant. They want reservations a month in advance! Might have to find a good Italian place instead!!

Thanks for all the recommendations and keep them coming! I plan on having to take some time off to recover FROM the trip!!!

If you like Indian food, the best in the world may be in London. The benefit of a long occupation. Jake

Try Giorgio Locatelli at The Churchill for interesting Italian food in very nice surroundings.

Little Italy in Soho is loud and lively with good food - remember my girlfriend dancing on the table there one night a few years back, when she was wild.

Marousch in Beachamp Place is top-notch Lebanese food and a very interesting clientele (round corner from Harrods).

Les Trois Garcons in Shoreditch is the most eccentrically designed interior in London and the food passable if you like French cuisine.

St. Ermin hotel, south of Green Park, and the Stockpot restaurant between Haymarket and Leicester Square, a hole-in-the-wall, no-smoking level, least expensive wholesome food in London.
