I have not been to Africa. I am regurgitating what my fathers Professional White Hunter, Norman Reed, had told him for his month long tent safari in Kenya and Tanganyika in October 1957. I agree with you that a heart/lung shot preserves meat and the deer I have shot there covered no more than 50 yards before folding up. One off hand shot at a deer taken at 125 yards with a 6.5 X 55 and 160 grain bullet hit high lung. I was aiming for the shoulder as there were other hunters in the area and I wanted the animal to fall where he stood. You know about "The best laid schemes of mice and men". The darn thing ran over two hundred yards before blowing blood and that was for ten yards before dropping dead. Back to Africa, the PWH wanted everything anchored and could have cared less about some of the meat being ruined. From my fathers account, all the beast were tough as nails and other dangerous things lurked in the tall grass.
